EGG Gallery is delighted to present the solo exhibition 'Take A Vacation-Plain Air Painting By Ma Kelu' by artist Ma Kelu, from October 27 to December 31 2019.
Ma Kelu was born in Shanghai in1954, later moving to Beijing. He launched his career in 1970 with an art style close to an impressionistic variation of landscape painting, developing a rather innovative artistic career independent from the contemporary Chinese art practices of the 1970s and 80s. He was one of the main members of the No Name Group founded in 1979, participating in an underground art exhibition in 1974, and the public exhibition of the No Name Group in 1979.
In the early 80s, he became a member of 'Beijing abstract art experimental group.' In 1988, he traveled to Germany, Sweden and Denmark, and eventually settled in New York. The following year, he was awarded a prize from the Skohagen School of Painting and Sculpture to create new artworks in Maine. From 1989 to 1990, he studied in the Department of Art, Imperial College, New York State University. In 2006, he returned to China where he has continued to produce abstract paintings.
