Swan Lake, the treasure of the Russian Classical Ballet, forms the basis of the classical ballet repertoire of the Mariinsky Theater. More than a hundred years ago, it was choreographed by Marius Petipa and is considered to be a hallmark of the Mariinsky Ballet.
Swan Lake tells the beautiful and tragic tale of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by the spell of a sorcerer. Doomed to spend her days swimming on the lake, Odette is able to transform to her beautiful human form at night. On one such night, she meets Prince Siegfried, explaining to him that the spell can only be broken through someone, who has never loved before, swearing to love Odette forever. However, the evil sorcerer Rothbart has other plans.
