Britain's National Theatre has been broadcasting video versions of their best theatre in over 45 countries for six years. This screening is a broadcast of Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch's (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, and Frankenstein at the National Theatre) performance of Hamlet at the Barbican back in 2015. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, this Hamlet sees smooth transitions between action and soliloquy, between peace and war.
As a country arms itself for warfare, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Running time is nearly three and a half hours, but the time flies by.
