Family area guide: Shunyi

Popular with families looking for spacious housing and nature nearby

There are good reasons why families love Shunyi: housing compounds are low rise, equipped with sports facilities, grassy outdoor spaces, supermarkets and restaurants and offer huge homes, close-knit communities and easy access to international schools. The downside for some is a sense of being locked away from the buzz of Beijing but the efficient subway system or a Didi taxi ride means Sanlitun is under 30 minutes away and 45 minutes will have you at Tiananmen square during off-peak periods. On weekends Shunyi families can be on the highway heading out for a weekend at the Great Wall in minutes.

Shopping

Beijing Scitech Premium Outlet Mall

Fashion’s biggest names, including Burberry, Max Mara, Nine West and Zegna, have all settled in charming boutique stores in an immense new outdoor village – the first of its kind in China.

Though a bit suburban Stepford, shopping is a relaxed affair, and the outlet’s pricing policy of a 40 per cent minimum discount is a recessionista’s dream.

With over 5,000 parking spots, a free shuttle bus from Scitech Plaza, and a subway station due to open on Line 10 next year, making a saving just got a whole lot easier. Jamie Penaloza
