From Christmas baubles to birthday banners, your first stop should be Ikea. At this giant Swedish outlet, you’ll find almost everything you need to brighten up your home. Get in the party mood by wading through the huge selection of decorations on offer. For Christmas, there are hanging decoration sets, wreaths, garlands, LED lighting chains, cushions, rugs and even wrapping paper. For a birthday party, load up the table with colour ful cutlery sets, napkins, tableware, and go wild with balloons and streamers.

TIanyi market

If you’re out for cheap and cheerful, hit up Tianyi Market in Xicheng district, one of Beijing’s most popular wholesale markets selling a wide range of decorations, gifts, flowers and toys. It’s a great hunting ground for Christmas tree lights and ornaments, stockings, wreaths, tinsel, masks and other cheesy decorations. They all cost so little that you won’t feel bad if you only use them once. For some material to make your own decorations, check out the fabric and haberdashery stalls that sell lace and ribbons, and if huggable soft toys happen to be on your shopping list, don’t miss the dedicated stalls on the fourth floor.

A German self-service megastore, Metro has an impressive range of Christmas ornaments, colourful costumes and fun candy. If you’re planning to serve food at your party, you can also stock up on imported food and wine. Remember to take your ID, as you need to register before you start shopping. This gives you access to all the products at any Metro store in Beijing.

Zara Home

For party tableware and furnishings, head down to your nearest Zara Home. This chic Spanish store offers affordable and good quality utensils and decorations. Check out the beautiful candles, candelabras, tablecloths, napkins and dinner ware. During the Christmas period, these are mostly in festive colours of glimmering gold, silver, red, green and white.

Katherine He

If you’re shopping in Solana mall, drop by the independent store Katherine He for charming decorations with a difference. Our Christmas favourites include a lamp held up by a Santa figurine and cute porcelain plates with a snowman design. There are plenty of non-festive ornaments too, such as carpets, ceramics and glassware.
