Established as the Metropolitan University in 1898, it wasn't until 1912 that it merged with another institution and was renamed Peking University (aka Beida). In 1952 it moved from a much smaller, central campus on Wusi Dajie to its current location, engulfing the university previously housed there. With its large lakes, little bridges, meandering paths and pretty pavilions the campus is an exquisite example of Qing dynasty architecture.
