This venue has closed.

On a street known more for connecting Sanlitun Bar Street with Xindong Lu than quiet spots worthy of a casual glass of wine, Yolanda’s Secret is pouring well-priced vino and serving up salted bar snacks in Waterford bone china.

It sounds like a joke; the name, the concept – it’s all a bit much to take at once. We didn’t really buy it until we made our way through the powder-blue doors. Evidently, Yolanda’s secret isn’t that she’s cheap. The place is tastefully decorated, with sophisticated accents that make it like a more practiced wine bar.

The high-topped bar separates the would-be wino from a rack of everyday juice (from 30RMB per glass) and bottles from more prestigious winemakers (from 450RMB per bottle). If you’re looking to shell out on a bottle of grand premier cru, you’re in for a let-down, but what are you doing near Bar Street anyways? This place is for friends who like a decent glass of wine and can appreciate value; the happy hour deal (four glasses of the daily house selection for 100RMB, offered daily from 4-9pm) is almost too cheap, but you can split up the four glasses anyway you like – four for all or all for you.

The bites are also damn good. An excellent charcuterie plate comes in two sizes (98RMB/128RMB) and the Parma ham and salami sandwich on spongy potato focaccia (68RMB) complements a buttery glass of French chardonnay.

The place is small, which makes service snappy, but it gets crowded quickly. This little gem is ready to win anyone over with generous pours, salted meats and just a bit of understated cool.
