Xingfucun Zhong Lu

We’re always on the lookout for quality late-night grub, and these days the Xingfucun area has no shortage of places competing for midnight supremacy. But in our book, no one can hold a candle to Lingerjiu’s (which just means 029) youpo noodles (youpomian 油泼面, 25RMB) and roujiamo (肉夹馍, 12RMB). The entrance to this tiny noodle shop opens onto a perennially bustling open kitchen. Steam billows from kettles as a cheery gang of cooks pull noodles, chop vegetables and spoon heaping ladles of pork between freshly sliced fat buns.

The biggest challenge at Lingerjiu is finding a seat – entirely divorced from conventional meal times, this place is consistently packed with representatives from every Beijing set. Whether it’s the iPad- transfixed office workers of 11am or the 2am Sanli-wasters, the allure of Lingerjiu’s massive bowls of thick chewy noodles, drenched in bright red oil and coated with their secret blend of chillies and spices keeps the tables full all day long. The freshness of the noodles and the diced veggies set this place well above the rank and file of Shaanxi noodle stalls.

The impressive demand and ceaseless turning of tables ensure that nothing at Lingerjiu ever sits in the kitchen for long – even well into the small hours the roujiamo are fresh and delicious. Hand- kneaded ’mos emerge from the pan coated in golden brown spirals that yield to a soft spongy interior, the perfect vessel for slow-braised pork and green peppers. For cheap, fresh and late, Lingerjiu is hard to beat.
