Gaobeidian Gujiaju Jie
This kilometre-long strip is home to over a hundred different stores selling handcrafted wares and trinkets, and while the 'antique' in the name often refers more to style than age or authenticity, it's still a great spot to pick up beautiful pieces of traditional Chinese furniture, including chairs, carved tables and decorative panels. Some of the European antique and furniture shops are marvels in themselves – think eighteenth-century French palais – while there are several outlets selling more modern takes on Chinese classics and imported Nordic pieces. Look out about halfway along for the 'museum', too – with its mighty red pillars, gold embellishments and even mounted deer heads, it might be the most garish, motley building front in the entire city.
